Washington’s Columbia Valley is home to some of America’s most exciting new winery and vineyard projects. Its diverse soils, high elevation vineyards, and close proximity to the Columbia River contribute all the key influences for producing world class, terroir-driven wines. Our 2014 Doherty Cabernet Franc comes from the recently created Ancient Lakes AVA, which resides within the valley, a particularly arid, high elevation region. The grape is challenging to work with, and rarely shows its full potential as Cabernet Sauvignon is typically favored for the best vineyard sites, but the region’s terroir is well-suited to bring out the best of the varietal – its rich savory flavors, elegant palate, and complex aromatics of earth and spice.
Dark purple in color, the nose is complex with boysenberry and cassis followed by signature varietal nuances of bay leaf, white pepper, and new leather. The palate is dense and powerful without excess, a savory expression of spicy plum and licorice. The finish is long and sustained by a vibrant streak of acidity and smooth velvety tannin. Nuances of black olive, damp earth, and fresh herbs bring complexity and make this an ideal food pairing wine for grilled lamb chops or roasted chicken with a mixed mushroom stuffing. The Doherty is approachable today after one hour in the decanter and should evolve nicely over the next 6-8 years.
