The wine world is waking up to the fact that Portugal has much more to offer than just its legendary fortified wines. Their hot summer weather and seafood rich cuisine calls for a refreshing style of white wine with minerality and bright acidity. Since 2007 we have had the pleasure of working with and importing wines from Xiero de Xisto and their 2013 Vinhas Velhas is a prime example of the first class vibrant white wines coming from Portugal.
The 2013 Vinhas Velhas (Portugese for ‘old vines’) is a traditional white grape blend of several varieties from the Alentejo region – Antao Vaz, Arinto, Verdelho, and Encruzado. Pale white gold in color with a slight greenish fleck, the nose exudes fragrant aromatics of candied citrus and flowers, leading to a crisp palate that pulses with flavors of lemon oil and grapefruit. The old vine complexity brings the finish to life with beautiful underlying minerality, fresh herbs, and a great sustained balance. An ideal wine for oysters, ceviche or any simply prepared grilled white fish.
