2013 Sergei SangioveseColumbia Valley, Washington

Washington’s Columbia Valley AVA has developed a well-earned stellar reputation over the past 30+ years.  With its varied well-draining soils, high elevation vineyards, and close proximity to the Columbia River, the region has all the key influences for the production of world class, terroir-driven wines.  The Sergei comes from the recently created Ancient Lakes AVA which resides within the valley, a particularly arid and dry region that has been successful in the cultivation of Riesling but also Tempranillo, Barbera, and Sangiovese.  While clearly New World in style, the region’s terroir imparts a cool and balanced style to its wines that also reveals a beguiling respect for the grapes’ Old World roots.

Pale ruby in color, the Sergei has a classic nose of black cherry dusted with earth and fresh herbs, accented by hints of leather and black pepper.  Silky blueberry and raspberry flavors are present on the smooth, refined palate, leading to a vibrant finish with elegant approachable tannin and classic Sangiovese acidity.  An ideal food pairing wine, the Sergei shows best alongside rich pasta dishes, roasted meats, and hard cheeses.
