It is our great pleasure to share with you the sixth vintage of our flagship wine – the 2011 Montesquieu Derenoncourt Napa Valley Meritage. The first domestic wine to ever carry the Montesquieu name, it represents our commitment to working with the Napa Valley’s greatest vineyards and one of our industry’s greatest talents – Stephane Derenoncourt. While the cool, late harvesting conditions of the 2011 vintage proved to be too steep a challenge for many producers, Stephane’s three decades in Bordeaux gave him the proper experience to fall back on and produce this stunning wine. The final blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon from Howell Mountain and 48% Merlot from Atlas Peak’s Stagecoach vineyard saw 18 months in the barrel prior to bottling.
Glossy crimson in color, the nose opens slowly to reveal black cherry skins with hints of cigar box, scorched earth, and grilled rosemary. The palate is robust with flavors of mulberry and blueberry skins complemented by hints of spice and ample fine grained tannin. The tannic presence endures through the finish together with hints of espresso, dark chocolate and mushroom. The wine’s balance promotes both enjoying the wine today or cellaring this for another 10-12 years to encourage further complexity.
