2010 Pandolfi Alberici Storie di TufoUmbria, Italy

Umbria is the quiet, secluded ‘green heart’ of Italy. Its central location makes it the only region within the country to have no coastline or border with another nation. Nestled in the western rolling hills of Orvieto near the border with Tuscany, we are excited to welcome back Pandolfi Alberici to our portfolio – and for the first time ever – with their flagship ‘Storie di Tufo’ IGT Rosso.

Deep purple in color, the international blend of native 65% Sangiovese together with 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot is reminiscent of the great Bolgheri Coast ‘Super Tuscans’. The nose reveals great complexity with hours of aeration – raspberry, damp earth, and cigar meld with a modern, restrained hint of toasted cedar and oak. The palate is dense and structured with opulent flavors of wild blueberry and fruitcake, leading to a finish driven by a gripping tannin and flavors of melted licorice and spice that are sustained for minutes. A savory, complex wine best served with a grilled beef or venison dish featuring Umbrian black truffles. The Pandolfi Alberici drinks well today but should cellar and evolve nicely for the next several years.
