Our release of the 2011 Derenoncourt California Lake County Cabernet Sauvignon delivers on the belief that world class wine need not always be sourced from the most pedigreed and time-honored vineyard sites. Since its first vintage in 2006, the Lake County Cabernet has always punched well above its weight class, carrying a level of power and sophistication typically reserved for the industry pacesetters producing Cab in Napa and Sonoma. This special terroir – naturally low yielding Cabernet vines planted in a mix of black obsidian and gravel soils at a breathtaking 2200’ above sea level – imparts a degree of freshness and complexity that is unmistakably a trait of great Lake County wine.
Bright glossy purple in color, the nose leaps from the glass with black cherry, pipe tobacco, and graphite. The palate is full of lush silky blackberry and mulberry with nuances of worn leather and spice. The bold fruit and complexity carries over deep into the finish with more subtle hints of volcanic minerally earth and continued spice notes. Recent tastings of the 2006 and 2007 vintages from this property confirm that this wine has many great years of drinking in front of it.
