The Happy Canyon AVA of Santa Barbara is building a strong reputation as a first class region for the production of bold, approachable red wines. This eastern edge of the Santa Ynez Valley benefits from its warm inland location, dry climate, and mineral-rich soils; an ideal terroir to explore many grape varietals including Sangiovese. These rolling hills, cool nights, and several other attributes mimic Tuscany in many ways, making Sangiovese an ideal choice for planting here.
Deep crimson in color, the nose reveals a seductive perfume of wild blueberries, roasted coffee, and fresh Tuscan herbs of rosemary and sage. The soulful palate brings rich bold flavors of black cherry and dark chocolate and a soft velvety mouthfeel. The finish displays a balanced dialogue between the oak and the Sangiovese’s natural acidity, delivering an approachable standalone style but a limitless array of food pairings as well. The wine is ideal with any grilled meats or pork dishes you may find yourself grilling over the Summer. Lovely today, the Raphael should evolve nicely over the next five to seven years.
