One of the most exciting wine regions to watch over the past decade has been Washington State’s Columbia Valley. As the region has developed, its top growers and vintners have focused less on producing excessively ripe, overly-extracted wines, instead their efforts have been aimed at achieving the balance and complexity that their cool, sunny terroir is tailor made to deliver. At its best, Columbia Valley Cabernet has much in common with the Left Bank of Bordeaux and we have a wonderful example to share with our 2014 Doherty.

Deep crimson in color, the Doherty’s nose reveals perfumed aromas of licorice, spice, and pencil shavings, leading to richer hints of blueberry, cedar and mocha as the wine opens up. The palate is silky and refined with soft flavors of dark cherry and cassis, complemented beautifully by a silky tannin structure. The finish contributes dark chocolate, blackberry, grilled herb flavors, and a healthy dose of gravelly earth that should only intensify over time. Approachable today, the Doherty should evolve nicely over the next 5 to 7 years.
