2014 Doherty Cabernet Franc

2014 Doherty Cabernet Franc

Columbia Valley, Washington

Washington’s Columbia Valley is quickly becoming one of the West Coast’s premier locations for wine. The Ancient Lakes AVA, with its high elevation and dry climate, is the perfect location to plant the fickle, yet rewarding Cabernet Franc vines. The 2014 Doherty, thanks to the mineral rich terroir, is complex and nuanced, rich with cassis and white pepper, dark spicy berries and plums. The powerful palate is balanced and full of herbs and earth, leading to a finish that is long and smooth, with pleasant acidity shows the vitality in this wine that pairs beautifully with savory dishes of all kinds.

Product Description

Washington’s Columbia Valley is home to some of America’s most exciting new winery and vineyard projects. Its diverse soils, high elevation vineyards, and close proximity to the Columbia River contribute all the key influences for producing world class, terroir-driven wines. Our 2014 Doherty Cabernet Franc comes from the recently created Ancient Lakes AVA, which resides within the valley, a particularly arid, high elevation region. The grape is challenging to work with, and rarely shows its full potential as Cabernet Sauvignon is typically favored for the best vineyard sites, but the region’s terroir is well-suited to bring out the best of the varietal – its rich savory flavors, elegant palate, and complex aromatics of earth and spice.

Dark purple in color, the nose is complex with boysenberry and cassis followed by signature varietal nuances of bay leaf, white pepper, and new leather. The palate is dense and powerful without excess, a savory expression of spicy plum and licorice. The finish is long and sustained by a vibrant streak of acidity and smooth velvety tannin. Nuances of black olive, damp earth, and fresh herbs bring complexity and make this an ideal food pairing wine for grilled lamb chops or roasted chicken with a mixed mushroom stuffing. The Doherty is approachable today after one hour in the decanter and should evolve nicely over the next 6-8 years.
